ADB Secures USD 5 Billion for Development Funding

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) successfully raised USD 5 billion on 23 September 2026 through a dual-tranche global benchmark United States dollar bond offering. These funds are designated for the ADB’s ordinary capital resources, supporting sustainable, inclusive, and resilient growth initiatives throughout Asia and the Pacific.

Tobias Hoschka, the ADB Treasurer, stated that the strong investor interest from diverse geographical regions demonstrates ongoing confidence in the institution's credit profile and its capacity to mobilise capital for its development mandate. This capital mobilisation is essential for advancing sustainable economic development across its member countries.

Details of the Dual-Tranche Offering

The offering comprised two distinct tranches. The first was a 3-year global benchmark US dollar bond, valued at USD 3 billion, carrying a coupon rate of 4.875% per annum, payable semi-annually. This tranche, which matures on 2 October 2029, was priced at 99.671% to yield 5.7 basis points over the 4.375% US Treasury notes due in September 2029.

The second tranche consisted of a 7-year global benchmark US dollar bond, securing USD 2 billion, with a coupon rate of 5% per annum, also payable semi-annually. This longer-term bond matures on 30 September 2033 and was priced at 99.476% to yield 7.3 basis points over the 4.5% US Treasury notes due in August 2033.

BofA Securities, Crédit Agricole CIB, J.P. Morgan, and RBC Capital Markets served as the lead managers for the transaction.

Broad Investor Participation Across Regions

Both tranches of the ADB’s bond issuance achieved wide distribution across primary markets globally. For the 3-year bond, 56% of the placement occurred in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, while 30% was allocated to the Americas, and 14% to Asia.

By investor type, banks accounted for 62% of the subscriptions, central banks and official institutions took 25%, and fund managers along with other investor categories received 13%. The 7-year bond saw 60% of its placement in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, 23% in the Americas, and 17% in Asia.

Investor types for this tranche included 51% from banks, 26% from central banks and official institutions, and 23% from fund managers and other investors. This geographical and institutional spread reflects the broad market appeal for ADB’s debt instruments.

Implications for Asia's Development Funding

The successful USD 5 billion bond issue positions the Asian Development Bank to continue its crucial role in financing development across Asia and the Pacific. This capital raising contributes to the ADB's broader objective of securing approximately USD 39 billion to USD 45 billion from capital markets throughout 2026, as stated by the institution.

For decision-makers in Asian governments and businesses reliant on multilateral development funding, this successful placement indicates consistent access to significant capital for infrastructure projects, social programmes, and economic resilience initiatives.

The strong global demand for ADB bonds suggests continued investor confidence in the region's development trajectory and the bank's operational stability, providing a clear signal of ongoing financial support for Asia's long-term growth objectives.
